While EU law permits such measures, they are permitted only under specific conditions and for limited timeframes. When extensions exceed twelve months, the Commission is required to issue a formal opinion on their continuation.

The European executive assessed both the necessity and proportionality of the ongoing controls, alongside alternative measures adopted by individual governments to minimize disruption to cross-border movement. Brussels maintains its commitment to upholding free movement and security principles across the Schengen zone, officials stated.

The Commission’s stated objective is to guide member states toward progressive normalization. The opinions delivered to the nine capitals contain specific recommendations designed to enable governments to work toward what Brussels terms the gradual elimination and progressive withdrawal of internal border controls.

The intervention from Brussels provoked an immediate and forceful response from Italy’s League party, which forms part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s ruling coalition. The party flatly rejected the Commission’s directive, asserting Italian sovereignty over border security matters.

The League issued a statement declaring that Italy alone will determine border control policies, insisting the nation retains full authority to decide how, when, for how long, and whom to check at its frontiers in order to protect Italian citizens. The party emphasized that such decisions will not be dictated by Brussels.

The confrontation highlights ongoing tensions between national governments prioritizing border security and migration control, and EU institutions seeking to preserve Schengen’s founding principle of passport-free travel across most of Europe’s internal boundaries.

The Schengen Area currently encompasses 27 European countries, allowing free movement of more than 400 million people across borders that were once heavily policed checkpoints. However, mounting concerns over irregular migration and security threats have prompted several member states to reimpose checks in recent years, testing the system’s resilience.

With information from Il Giornale

The European Commission urged Italy and eight other nations to phase out Schengen internal border controls, prompting immediate rejection from Rome’s coalition government.

[122
4816,902,159,191,3109,149,4815
134
post-4443","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-border-controls","tag-european-commission","tag-european-union","tag-italy","tag-league-party","tag-migration","tag-schengen-area","nfg_topic-europe
["GET
