The California Post-McLaughlin Associates survey of 800 likely primary voters, conducted between May 26 and May 28, reveals that approximately 50 percent disapprove of Newsom’s handling of his gubernatorial duties, while 49 percent approve, as New York Post<\/em> reports. Only 1.6 percent of respondents remained undecided about the Democratic governor’s performance.<\/p>\n

Pollster John McLaughlin<\/strong> characterized Newsom as a polarizing political figure, noting that disapproval extends even into Democratic ranks, with 22 percent of Democrats expressing dissatisfaction with his job performance. McLaughlin stated that most Californians are seeking change in their state’s leadership direction.<\/p>\n

The poll, which carries a margin of error of 3.5 percent at a 95 percent confidence level, also examined the emerging gubernatorial race. Democrat billionaire Tom Steyer<\/strong> is currently tied with Republican Steve Hilton<\/strong> at 25 percent support each, while Xavier Becerra<\/strong> trails in third place with 19 percent. Newsom has not yet endorsed any candidate in the race.<\/p>\n

According to McLaughlin’s analysis, Hilton commands support among Republicans and independents, but faces a ceiling due to Democratic voters comprising roughly half the electorate. The real contest, he noted, is between Steyer and Becerra for Democratic support, with Steyer appearing to gain momentum among Democratic primary voters.<\/p>\n

Wrong Track Numbers Spell Trouble<\/h2>\n

Beyond Newsom’s personal approval ratings, California voters expressed deep pessimism about the state’s overall direction. Only 29 percent of those surveyed believed California was heading in the right direction, while 56 percent said the state was on the wrong track.<\/p>\n

These unfavorable numbers present a significant challenge for Newsom, who is widely expected to leverage his California record as a springboard for a potential 2028 presidential campaign. While he has not formally announced presidential ambitions, the Democratic field for the next election cycle is anticipated to be crowded with contenders.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles Mayoral Race Tightens<\/h2>\n

The poll also captured voter sentiment in the Los Angeles mayoral contest, where Spencer Pratt<\/strong> now leads with 30.1 percent support compared to incumbent Karen Bass<\/strong> at 29.5 percent. Socialist councilwoman Nithya Raman<\/strong> placed third with 23.4 percent, setting up a competitive three-way race heading into the primary election.<\/p>\n
