Ra\u00fal Guillermo Rodr\u00edguez Castro<\/strong>, known by the nickname “El Cangrejo” or “The Crab” due to a six-fingered hand caused by a congenital deformity, serves as the influential eldest grandson of 94-year-old former dictator Ra\u00fal Castro. The elder Castro was indicted for murder in Miami on May 23 in connection with the 1996 shoot-down of two aircraft operated by Brothers to the Rescue.<\/p>\n

The younger Castro, often called Raulito, holds the rank of colonel in Cuba’s Interior Ministry and directly oversees his grandfather’s security detail. This position grants him significant influence in a regime where experts believe Ra\u00fal Castro continues to wield considerable power despite stepping down as president in 2018 and officially retiring from all duties in 2021.<\/p>\n

Dr. William LeoGrande<\/strong>, a Latin America specialist at American University, noted that whenever Ra\u00fal appears publicly, Raulito is positioned directly over his shoulder.<\/p>\n

The grandson was present when CIA Director John Ratcliffe<\/strong> traveled to Havana for meetings with Cuban officials, including Interior Minister L\u00e1zaro \u00c1lvarez Casas<\/strong> and the head of Cuban intelligence, as New York Post<\/em> reports. Notably, a CIA statement following the encounter mentioned Castro’s name first, even though he did not hold the highest official position among those present. The statement indicated Ratcliffe went to personally deliver President Trump’s message that America stands ready to seriously engage on economic and security matters, but only if Cuba implements fundamental changes.<\/p>\n

Initial contact occurred in February at an annual conference on Saint Kitts, where Raulito Castro met with advisors to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio<\/strong>, the Miami Herald reported.<\/p>\n

His late father, Luis Alberto Rodr\u00edguez L\u00f3pez-Calleja<\/strong>, established the military conglomerate Grupo de Administraci\u00f3n Empresarial, known as GAESA, which the Trump administration maintains exploits the Cuban people and controls 70 percent of the country’s hard currency. His mother is Debora Castro Esp\u00edn<\/strong>, Ra\u00fal’s eldest daughter.<\/p>\n

In a Spanish-language video message directed at the Cuban people on Wednesday, Rubio declared that Cuba is controlled by GAESA, describing it as a state within a state that answers to no one and hoards business profits for a narrow elite.<\/p>\n

The younger Castro, grand-nephew of late dictator Fidel Castro, appears to embrace his “Crab” nickname and enjoys an affluent lifestyle, posting on social media from boats and traveling to Panama to monitor Cuban business operations abroad.<\/p>\n

LeoGrande observed that Raulito does not lead what one would call a monk’s existence, apparently enjoying the high life, though not quite as ostentatiously as cousin Sandro, grandson of Fidel, who is known for flaunting his wealth and cigar habit online.<\/p>\n

Raulito Castro has become a crucial point of contact in discussions where the United States would exchange economic engagement for a crackdown on cooperation with American adversaries. The Trump administration seeks reliable insiders with whom it can work, concerned about a potential collapse or failed state scenario just off US shores.<\/p>\n

Negotiations have proceeded slowly, with Cuban government officials expressing fears of a US invasion as a blockade imposed after America seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro<\/strong> has severed the island’s oil supply.<\/p>\n

Representative Maria Salazar<\/strong>, a Florida Republican, stated on the day of the elder Ra\u00fal Castro’s indictment that these thieves cannot be allowed to run that island any longer, given their history of providing a platform to American enemies for years. She told reporters the indictment sends a clear message to Ra\u00fal to look at Maduro’s fate if he does not want to end up in the same situation.<\/p>\n
