Authorities initially called her as a witness, a common tactic used before filing formal charges against a target.<\/p>\n<p>The controversy erupted in April following a raid on one of the largest drug laboratories ever discovered in Mexico. State police forces targeted a Sinaloa Cartel installation during the operation. The controversy coincided with Washington&#8217;s public announcement of indictments against senior figures from Mexico&#8217;s ruling MORENA party for allegedly working with the Sinaloa Cartel.<\/p>\n<p>Among those indicted is <strong>Ruben Rocha Moya<\/strong>, the current governor of Sinaloa. President <strong>Claudia Sheinbaum<\/strong> has vigorously defended Rocha Moya and resisted his extradition to the United States, insisting no evidence exists of any wrongdoing. The dispute has created serious friction between Washington and Mexico City, as the U.S. government intensifies pressure to hold accountable not only cartel operatives but also the politicians who shield them.<\/p>\n<p>Sheinbaum herself called for the investigation into Maru Campos, declaring that a state governor working directly with foreign agencies constitutes treason.<\/p>\n<p>Almost immediately after her initial hearing, Campos received a second summons related to a kidnapping investigation. Authorities now claim she conspired to kidnap her predecessor, a cartel-linked politician named <strong>Javier Corral<\/strong>. The allegation stems from Campos&#8217; attempt to arrest Corral on corruption charges connected to financial crimes committed during his term as governor.<\/p>\n<p>Corral has recently emerged as a powerful ally of the MORENA party. He even met with one of Rocha Moya&#8217;s associates, who also faces U.S. prosecution on drug trafficking charges.
