According to Nius<\/em>, emergency services were deployed in force to the station on Tuesday morning after a 31-year-old Swiss national allegedly attacked three victims aged 28, 43, and 52 with a knife. The Zurich cantonal police confirmed the incident and stated that officers apprehended the suspect at the station.<\/p>\n

Multiple witnesses gave consistent accounts of a man going after people with a knife. Video footage captured at the scene shows an individual running from the station hall while shouting “Allahu Akbar,” passing a group of children as he ran. The station area was sealed off extensively, with access to the underpass via elevators temporarily blocked.<\/p>\n

Swiss broadcaster SRF has now reported on the suspect’s prior connections to the Islamist scene in Winterthur. Research by SRF indicates that the 31-year-old’s name surfaced in 2018 during investigations into the youth group of the An’Nur Mosque, which was later shut down.<\/p>\n

The suspect allegedly belonged to the circle of a group whose members faced criminal charges and subsequent convictions. According to files reviewed by SRF, the current suspect repeatedly received so-called Naschids, religious chants that can be used in radical contexts to spread Islamist and jihadist content. He also allegedly received videos from the Islamic State, sent by someone SRF describes as a key figure in Winterthur’s jihadist scene at the time.<\/p>\n

Two brothers of the detained man also reportedly came to the attention of authorities in investigations concerning potential radicalization. The family originates from Turkey, though the suspect himself holds Swiss citizenship. He is believed to have spent the past two to three years living in Turkey, though his reasons for returning to Switzerland remain unclear.<\/p>\n

Continued Monitoring and Mental Health Concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n

SRF reports that the man remained under official scrutiny even after the initial investigations. A source familiar with the case told the broadcaster that the 31-year-old repeatedly attracted attention for attempting to convince others of jihad and distributing corresponding propaganda.<\/p>\n

The suspect’s mental state was also reportedly the subject of earlier official assessments. According to SRF, authorities considered the man to be psychologically disturbed, though details regarding any specific diagnosis or severity remain unknown. He was at some point placed in a psychiatric facility, but the circumstances of his release have not been disclosed.<\/p>\n

The attack adds to growing concerns across Europe about individuals with known Islamist connections and mental health issues who remain at large despite prior official attention. Swiss authorities have not yet commented on whether the suspect was under active monitoring at the time of the attack or what risk assessment protocols were applied.<\/p>\n
