He called for the introduction of restrictive annual quotas covering visa numbers, required skills, and countries of origin.

Presidential ambitions and electoral calculations

Darmanin is widely viewed as a likely candidate in the 2026 presidential race to succeed Macron, though he has not formally announced his intentions. He has previously argued that a unified candidacy from the centre-right and moderate left is necessary to prevent the radical left from seizing power.

Positioning himself as a potential rallying figure for this coalition, Darmanin blamed not only government policy but also what he termed wild capitalism for immigration problems. He accused big business of importing cheap foreign labour to suppress wages, noting that many difficult and physically demanding jobs are now performed almost exclusively by foreign workers who are poorly paid and exploited.

Demographics reshape French politics

France does not officially collect census data on race or ethnic origin, but a recent study from the National Institute of Demographic Studies (INED) found that one in three people in France were either migrants or the children or grandchildren of migrants as of 2020, Breitbart News reports.

The rapidly shifting demographic profile is expected to dominate the upcoming presidential campaign. Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella of the populist Rassemblement National are expected to centre their campaigns on immigration and national identity, while centre-right figures such as Les Républicains Senator Bruno Retailleau are also preparing to make it a priority issue.

The electoral impact of immigration is already visible. A recent Ifop survey found that four in ten voters with two non-European heritage parents plan to vote for far-left candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon in 2026, a figure that rises to 51 per cent among Muslim voters.

With information from Breitbart News

France’s Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin has proposed a three-year moratorium on legal immigration, warning the country has reached its limit for integrating newcomers after decades of mass migration.

[122
235,55,2829,2830,2233,2831
134
post-2992","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-emmanuel-macron","tag-france","tag-gerald-darmanin","tag-immigration-moratorium","tag-renaissance-party","tag-social-integration","nfg_topic-europe
["GET
