Instead, he prefers safer facilities, including modern shelters in the Krasnodar region.

At the same time, his attention has been focused almost exclusively on the war in Ukraine, which is now entering its fifth year. Secrecy is nothing new for Putin, a former agent of the Russian intelligence services.

However, in recent times he has reduced public appearances even further, preferring to send messages via video.

The reasons behind enhanced security

There is concern in the Kremlin about a possible assassination attempt or even a coup. A significant role in this is played by Ukraine’s increasing drone attacks deep inside Russian territory. The Kremlin continues to publish videos of Putin, but the information remains general and vague.

Researchers who have carefully studied these materials have identified interesting details. In some videos, changes in the position of books or other objects are visible, while some were presented as recent even though they were filmed earlier. The Russian president reportedly uses offices without windows so as not to reveal his exact location.

Nevertheless, Putin appeared publicly in Moscow’s Red Square for the anniversary of Victory Day and the major military parade. Following discussions about the shelters, the Kremlin also released another video showing the president meeting with a retired teacher in a hotel in central Moscow. The scene with flowers was meant to show a simple leader close to the people.

How likely is a coup?

The information that came to light has divided analysts. Some believe that the threat of assassination or overthrow is real, especially following successful Ukrainian operations. Others attribute them to attempts to destabilize Russian leadership from abroad.

Most agree, however, that Putin himself shows increased concern for his security. Economic difficulties and pressure on the elites intensify tensions within the power system.

How the Russian power pyramid works

Political scientist Alexandra Prokopenko, a former advisor to the Central Bank of Russia, describes the system as a series of power pyramids. Each one revolves around a powerful patron who controls resources and access to decisions. These patrons do not cooperate with each other, which makes any collective action against Putin difficult.

The Russian president’s strategy is based on exactly this: he divides the elites, makes them dependent on his favor and makes them compete for a larger share. So far, the only significant attempt was the uprising by Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner group in June 2023.

However, as resources become limited due to the war and sanctions, competition intensifies. Various groups struggle for Putin’s attention and a larger piece of the pie, without yet challenging the system itself.

nfg-origin:gr

Western intelligence sources report that Vladimir Putin is spending increasing time in underground shelters due to security concerns, including fears of assassination attempts and Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory.

[122
2348,2347,214,2346,222,139,2349
135
post-2596","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-krasnodar-region","tag-kremlin-security","tag-russia","tag-underground-bunkers","tag-vladimir-putin","tag-war-in-ukraine","tag-western-intelligence","nfg_topic-world
["GET
