{"id":2000,"date":"2026-05-21T18:35:36","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T15:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsfire.gr\/en\/?p=2000"},"modified":"2026-05-21T20:26:44","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T17:26:44","slug":"immediate-reinforcement-of-the-patriot-air-defense-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsfire.gr\/en\/immediate-reinforcement-of-the-patriot-air-defense-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Immediate Reinforcement of the Patriot Air Defense System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lockheed Martin, the American defense contractor, announced the signing of a major $61 million contract with the U.S. Army to upgrade the Patriot air defense system, with the aim of eliminating its blind spots.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new initiative includes the <strong>deployment<\/strong> of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>a <strong>containerized launcher<\/strong> (<strong>MSECL<\/strong>: Missile Segment Enhancement Containerized Launcher)<\/li>\n<li>a <strong>missile guidance device (RIG-360 DCS<\/strong>: Remote Interceptor Guidance 360 Degrees Containerized System).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These two systems will <strong>work together<\/strong> to <strong>address<\/strong> the <strong>Patriot\u2019s fundamental tactical drawback\u2014the existence of dead zones where enemy targets can strike unhindered.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The concept of a dead zone means that the Patriot system cannot engage targets outside its radar coverage area. <strong>According to the contract terms, the development of both systems must be completed by May 31, 2027.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently, a standard Patriot system relies on the AN\/MPQ-53 radar, which provides coverage only within a specific arc and <strong>not 360\u00b0.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When a threat approaches from outside this sector, the system\u2019s <strong>ability<\/strong> to intercept it <strong>drops drastically,<\/strong> as the radar cannot supply the necessary tracking and fire control data for the effective operation of the Patriot missile.<\/p>\n<p>This limitation makes the deployment of Patriots less flexible, <strong>especially when threats come simultaneously from multiple directions<\/strong> (as can be achieved by anyone equipped with dozens of very low-cost drones).<\/p>\n<p>The RIG-360 DCS is designed to solve this problem.
