According to government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis<\/strong>, writing in Cyprus Mail<\/em>, the discussions will place particular weight on the Multiannual Financial Framework, the critical budgetary blueprint that will govern EU spending from 2028 through 2034.<\/p>\n

Letymbiotis<\/strong> noted that Cyprus made significant headway on the framework during its recent EU Council presidency, establishing a foundation for final political negotiations aimed at securing an agreement before the close of 2026.<\/p>\n

The spokesman advocated for a robust and equitable European budget capable of addressing security imperatives and economic competitiveness while acknowledging the distinct vulnerabilities of small island nations and delivering meaningful support for development and social cohesion across member states.<\/p>\n

Cyprus Division and UN Mediation Efforts<\/h2>\n

Letymbiotis<\/strong> confirmed that Costa<\/strong> would receive an update on recent activity surrounding the Cyprus question, including initiatives to restart negotiations, the recent visit by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres<\/strong>, and the mandate of the EU’s newly appointed special representative for Cyprus, Raffaele Fitto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The spokesman clarified that while the negotiation process operates under United Nations auspices, the European Union can function as both supporter and accelerant, deploying its political influence and available tools to encourage progress.<\/p>\n

Turkey’s Role in Resolution Framework<\/h2>\n

Addressing Turkey’s position, Letymbiotis<\/strong> suggested that advancement in EU-Turkey relations could serve as motivation for Ankara to make a meaningful contribution toward resuming negotiations and resolving the Cyprus issue in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus holds full EU membership status and that a reunified Cyprus would retain that membership, requiring any settlement to guarantee a fully functional European state compliant with EU law and foundational Union principles and values.<\/p>\n

The spokesman characterized Friday’s meeting as another valuable forum for substantive dialogue on Europe’s pressing challenges alongside matters of particular national importance to Cyprus.<\/p>\n
