Jean-Luc M\u00e9lenchon, the radical left-wing leader of La France Insoumise, has publicly disavowed his former opposition to Islamic veiling, calling his earlier stance a grave mistake while accusing the National Rally of divisiveness and sexism for proposing a public veil ban.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaking before party militants in Paris on September 2nd, according to Valeurs Actuelles<\/em>, M\u00e9lenchon<\/strong> delivered a sharp rebuke to Marine Le Pen’s party following its announcement that it would seek to ban the wearing of the Islamic veil in public spaces if victorious in the 2027 elections. The National Rally proposal has reignited France’s long-running debate over secularism, religious expression, and national identity.<\/p>\n

M\u00e9lenchon accused the National Rally of attempting to divide the French people, claiming that the country is tired of the issue and that what matters is collective action rather than personal appearance choices. He went further, branding the RN as violent and misogynistic in its approach to the veil question.<\/p>\n

A Complete Reversal on the Veil<\/h2>\n

The La France Insoumise leader then acknowledged that he himself had undergone a profound shift in thinking, now characterizing his previous opposition to the Islamic veil as a serious error. The change represents a stark departure from positions he held consistently for years.<\/p>\n

In April 2010, appearing on the French television program “On n’est pas couch\u00e9,” M\u00e9lenchon described veiling as degrading treatment that should be prohibited under republican principles. He called it a provocation and predicted the Republic would win by banning it. Just months earlier, in February 2010, he had criticized the decision to field a veiled candidate for the New Anticapitalist Party in regional elections, calling it immature and attention-seeking in an interview with Marianne magazine.<\/p>\n

As recently as 2015, M\u00e9lenchon urged Christian believers on the program “Face aux chr\u00e9tiens” to directly confront veiled women about what he then termed an object of submission. During his 2017 presidential campaign, he remained combative on the issue, referring to the veil dismissively as a piece of cloth on the head.<\/p>\n

From Patriarchal Symbol to Personal Freedom<\/h2>\n

The transformation in M\u00e9lenchon’s position is now complete. Before his party faithful, he explained that conversations and encounters with veiled women, as well as with non-religious women who defend the principle that each woman should control her own appearance, changed his understanding. He now claims to have been mistaken in viewing the veil primarily through the lens of patriarchal domination.<\/p>\n

The issue carries significant strategic weight for the Insoumise leader, who has positioned himself and his party in recent years as champions in the fight against what they term Islamophobia. This public act of contrition regarding his past statements on the veil appears calculated to consolidate support among an electoral base that values such advocacy.<\/p>\n

The sharp contrast between M\u00e9lenchon’s current and former positions highlights the evolution of France’s political left on questions of Islam, secularism, and integration. Where he once viewed restrictions on religious dress as a defense of republican values and women’s dignity, he now frames such proposals as discriminatory and divisive.<\/p>\n

The National Rally’s renewed push to extend veil restrictions beyond existing bans on face coverings and religious symbols in schools suggests the issue will remain at the forefront of French political debate heading into the next presidential election cycle.<\/p>\n
