Declared under a marine park regime enacted in April 2025, the zones were added to Turkey’s maritime spatial planning map as protected marine areas on 2 August 2025 and given formal legal status on 16 August 2026.<\/p>\n

Acer argued that the marine parks fall within what Turkey considers its lawful maritime jurisdiction and are consistent with international law, while asserting that freedom of navigation remains intact.
