Prime Minister P\u00e9ter Magyar<\/strong> confirmed the crash on Facebook on the morning of August 24, stating that the cause remained under investigation. Magyar said the defence minister was en route to the crash site and that preliminary reports indicated no injuries and no damage to civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi<\/strong> said in a video statement posted on social media that the pilot was being transported by ambulance but had sustained no injuries. The minister praised the pilot’s efforts to ensure the aircraft came down on military property rather than civilian areas.<\/p>\n

Ruszin-Szendi confirmed he was heading to the scene alongside the chief of the general staff and pledged to provide further details from the crash site. Hungarian media outlets published footage showing the wreckage engulfed in flames on open ground.<\/p>\n

Swedish Manufacturer Confirms Involvement<\/h2>\n

Swedish defence manufacturer Saab<\/strong> acknowledged it had been informed that one of its aircraft was involved in the incident but said it had no additional information and directed all inquiries to Hungarian authorities. The cause of the accident has not been determined.<\/p>\n

Szolnok, located southeast of Budapest, hosts a Hungarian Defence Forces helicopter base. The Gripen fleet is normally stationed at Kecskem\u00e9t, also in central Hungary.<\/p>\n

Two Decades of Gripen Operations<\/h2>\n

Hungary has operated the Swedish-built JAS 39 Gripen for twenty years under a lease agreement with Saab. The aircraft are scheduled to transfer to full Hungarian ownership this year. Budapest ordered four additional single-seat JAS 39C jets under a contract extension agreed in 2024, with the first two delivered in April.<\/p>\n

The crash marks the first loss of a Hungarian Gripen in more than ten years. It occurs as Magyar’s government, which took office in May, has elevated defence cooperation on the agenda, including during his first major bilateral discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni<\/strong> in Rome.<\/p>\n

Previous Incidents and NATO Duties<\/h2>\n

Hungary lost two Gripen jets in 2015, one during a multinational exercise at \u010c\u00e1slav in the Czech Republic in May and another at Kecskem\u00e9t the following month. Both pilots survived those incidents, and the fleet was temporarily grounded for review, as Brussels Signal<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n

The Hungarian Gripen fleet performs NATO air policing missions, including rotations covering the airspace of the Baltic states. Hungarian authorities have not indicated whether the remaining jets will be grounded pending the outcome of the current investigation.<\/p>\n
