Speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Atlanta, the New York Democrat branded the court a subsidiary of President <strong>Donald Trump&#8217;s<\/strong> Make America Great Again movement and pledged to pursue what he termed <em>dramatic Supreme Court reform<\/em> if his party secures control of Congress and the White House.<\/p>\n<p>While Jeffries declined to specify exactly what reforms he envisions, other Democratic lawmakers have been less coy about their intentions, as <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> reports. Representative <strong>Jamie Raskin<\/strong> of Maryland, the ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee, has already introduced legislation that would expand the court from nine to thirteen justices, a number carefully calculated to hand Democrats an instant majority on the bench.<\/p>\n<p>The court-packing proposal has garnered significant support within Democratic ranks. Senators <strong>Ed Markey<\/strong> of Massachusetts, <strong>Adam Schiff<\/strong> of California, <strong>Tina Smith<\/strong> of Minnesota, and <strong>Elizabeth Warren<\/strong> of Massachusetts have all endorsed similar legislation. The Democratic Socialists of America, of which Ocasio-Cortez is a member, advocates an even more radical position: abolishing the Supreme Court entirely and replacing it with a judiciary chosen by and answerable to Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic claims that the Supreme Court has become a partisan arm of the MAGA movement do not withstand scrutiny. While Trump has indeed won important victories before the court during his second term, including limitations on district judges imposing nationwide injunctions and strengthened presidential authority over independent agencies, the same court has delivered some of the administration&#8217;s most significant defeats.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court struck down Trump&#8217;s sweeping use of emergency powers to impose global tariffs, rejected his attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, and blocked his effort to fire Federal Reserve Governor <strong>Lisa Cook<\/strong>. These were not peripheral matters but central components of Trump&#8217;s economic, immigration, and executive power agenda. A judicial body willing to invalidate signature presidential policies can hardly be characterized as subservient to any political movement.<\/p>\n<p>That judicial independence is precisely what court packing would destroy. The Supreme Court can only restrain presidents and Congress if its composition remains stable and insulated from political manipulation. Once one party adds seats to manufacture an ideological majority, the opposing party will have every incentive to do the same when they next control Washington. The cycle would be unstoppable.<\/p>\n<p>Under such a system, the court would cease functioning as an independent branch of government and would instead become an extension of electoral politics, with constitutional precedent shifting whenever a new congressional majority possessed the votes to create a new judicial majority. This would not reform the Supreme Court but would obliterate the system of checks and balances that protects American liberty.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, such radical institutional changes would require sixty votes in the Senate to overcome a filibuster. Democrats, however, have made clear they intend to eliminate that procedural safeguard as well. The fate of former Senators <strong>Joe Manchin<\/strong> and <strong>Kyrsten Sinema<\/strong>, who were effectively driven from the Democratic Party after voting with Republicans to preserve the filibuster, serves as a warning to any Democrat who might consider putting institutional integrity above partisan loyalty.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic establishment has repeatedly demonstrated its inability to resist demands from the party&#8217;s activist Left wing. Proposals that originate with socialists and fringe elements regularly migrate into mainstream Democratic policy platforms. Court packing is well advanced along this trajectory, transforming from a radical idea into an increasingly mainstream position within the party.<\/p>\n<p>Every vote cast for a Democratic congressional candidate this year brings the party one step closer to having the power to implement its court-packing agenda.
