The recent assault on the Spanish exclave of Ceuta on the North African coast, where tens of thousands of migrants stormed the territory, exposed both the viability and limitations of defensive action. While local authorities acted decisively to repel the invasion, Madrid&#8217;s socialist government proved reluctant to support robust enforcement measures.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome in Ceuta was mixed. Security forces succeeded in rapidly expelling a substantial portion of the invaders back across the border, aided by special legislation applicable only in the exclave and not on mainland Spain. However, thousands broke through, disappeared into Ceuta&#8217;s interior, began terrorizing the local population, or proceeded onward toward Europe&#8217;s generous welfare systems.<\/p>\n<h2>Eastern Border Under Coordinated Assault<\/h2>\n<p>Spain is far from alone in facing weaponized migration pressure. Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict, Poland and the Baltic states have confronted growing migration flows, with Belarus deliberately redirecting Middle Eastern migration streams to destabilize its western neighbors. Their determination stands in stark contrast to the paralysis afflicting the bloc&#8217;s supranational institutions.<\/p>\n<h2>Turkey and the Merkel Legacy<\/h2>\n<p>The strategic deployment of migration as a weapon is not new. Turkish President <strong>Recep Tayyip Erdogan<\/strong> has wielded this leverage since the border security deal brokered by <strong>Angela Merkel<\/strong> enabled him to manipulate migration routes across the eastern Mediterranean, extracting concessions from the European Union by opening or closing the floodgates at will.<\/p>\n<p>Historical precedent extends even further. In its final decade, East Germany&#8217;s SED regime\u2014the predecessor of today&#8217;s Left Party, which now advocates borderless migration with particular fanaticism\u2014attempted to destabilize West Germany by channeling Lebanese asylum seekers across the inner-German border. The results of that diversion persist today: Germany&#8217;s first major asylum crisis in the 1980s and the enduring problem of criminal clans that spread from Berlin throughout northern Germany.<\/p>\n<h2>Nation States Act Where Brussels Fails<\/h2>\n<p>The concept of &#8220;Fortress Europe,&#8221; previously dismissed as either a pejorative employed by migration lobbyists or an extremist formulation, has now entered mainstream political discourse. EU parliamentarians and government officials increasingly invoke the term openly.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the fortress remains largely rhetorical. When concrete action occurs\u2014whether in Ceuta, at Eastern European borders, or through the Italian government&#8217;s determined crackdown on so-called humanitarian smugglers in the Mediterranean\u2014it is invariably individual nation states that act decisively to defend their borders and sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>Protection of external borders was designated an EU responsibility complementary to the opening of internal frontiers, reinforced through countless rhetorical commitments, agreements, and asylum packages. The institutions tasked with this mission, however, cannot fulfill it.<\/p>\n<p>The border agency Frontex remains a toothless entity, subordinated to the absurdities of EU law that guarantees asylum procedures to anyone invoking the word, prohibits pushbacks, and leaves Frontex little more than the function of documenting illegal migration and channeling it into pseudo-legal pathways.<\/p>\n<h3>The Fifth Column Within<\/h3>\n<p>Defending a fortress becomes nearly impossible when the fifth column operates within its walls, throwing the gates wide open. The migration magnets emanating from within the EU itself\u2014generous social benefits, permissive residency and naturalization regulations promising lifetime welfare support\u2014make weaponized migration attacks viable and render European states vulnerable to blackmail.<\/p>\n<p>Merkel demolished the dams; Spanish socialist <strong>Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/strong> has continued her work through mass legalization policies. The more or less openly stated objective is transformation of the native populations to cement the power of ruling elites.<\/p>\n<h2>National Survival Requires National Action<\/h2>\n<p>The struggle concerns nothing less than the survival of Europe&#8217;s peoples. This battle must be waged by nations themselves, if necessary against the EU.
