The allegation came in response to coverage of the death of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old found dead following a boating excursion with friends in Mississippi.

Strahan Interview Draws Fire

Norman singled out Michael Strahan, host of “Good Morning America,” for his interview with Wells’ parents. She objected to Strahan asking the grieving mother and father why their son would have chosen to remain on Horn Island, arguing the question forced them to defend a decision whose circumstances remained unclear.

Norman described the line of questioning as subjective rather than objective, and characterized it as insensitive toward the bereaved parents.

She then expanded her criticism beyond the individual interview, asserting that news organizations have failed to learn they cannot automatically trust law enforcement as reliable primary sources. Norman invoked what she termed Mississippi’s historical context as the state with the most documented lynchings, suggesting this background demanded greater skepticism from journalists covering Wells’ death.

Norman has returned repeatedly to ABC’s handling of the Wells story, at one point accusing the network of gaslighting the public and describing one digital article as problematic victim-blaming.

Additional Targets

Her criticism has not been limited to the Wells coverage. Norman also took aim at “World News Tonight with David Muir” over its reporting on a New Mexico court order requiring Meta to pay $567 million in child safety penalties. She compared ABC’s coverage unfavorably with NBC’s version, faulting her former employer for declining to use what she considered the judge’s strongest language.

Norman suggested this editorial choice had the effect of protecting Meta and softening the impact of the story.

She has also criticized ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jon Karl and Stephen A. Smith, the high-profile ESPN personality whose network operates under the same corporate umbrella.

Contentious Departure

The barrage of public criticism is particularly notable given Norman departed ABC only months ago when the network opted not to renew her contract.

Status previously reported Norman’s exit in April and disclosed Friday that she was not well-regarded by ABC News leadership. The newsletter cited unnamed sources describing friction between Norman and others within the organization during her tenure.

Following her departure, ABC and Norman engaged in what Status characterized as a contentious exchange primarily concerning her forthcoming book. The network reportedly sought information about the book’s contents and other details.

Norman later revealed publicly that she had altered the book’s cover photograph at ABC’s request. She wrote on Instagram that the change was made to honor ABC News’ preference against using the originally selected image, according to Status.

In an Instagram farewell message posted after her departure, Norman made clear she was dissatisfied with how her time at the network ended. She expressed hope for a longer tenure and described the abbreviated conclusion as difficult. Norman said it broke her heart that she did not have the opportunity to bid viewers a proper goodbye.

Reports indicated Norman had been informed as early as March that ABC would not renew her contract. She continued appearing on air for several weeks before news of the decision leaked in early April, at which point she was reportedly removed from broadcasts.

With information from New York Post

Former ABC News weekend anchor Janai Norman has publicly criticized her ex-employer and its personalities on social media since her contract ended, creating unease among network staff.

[122
2621,2514,11679,11677,5453,11678,278
137
post-14914","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-abc-news","tag-disney","tag-good-morning-america","tag-janai-norman","tag-media-criticism","tag-michael-strahan","tag-usa","nfg_topic-culture-wars
["GET
