The facility also produces fuzes, grenades, and missile warheads.<\/p>\n<p>Initial reports indicate a fire first ignited in the powder-pressing department before the explosion occurred. Early witness statements pointed to a press that detonated during processing operations, as Brussels Signal reports.<\/p>\n<p>Firefighters and police units were already responding to the initial blaze when the subsequent explosion erupted. Videos circulating on social media captured flames, a violent detonation, and a mushroom-shaped cloud of smoke billowing above the industrial complex. The force of the explosion was felt up to 30 kilometres away, with residents throughout the Sacco valley reporting shaking buildings and shattered windows.<\/p>\n<p>KNDS confirmed that no injuries or fatalities had been reported in the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The company issued a statement acknowledging that the circumstances surrounding the blast remain under active investigation by teams on the ground, adding that it was premature to offer confirmed details regarding the cause or precise sequence of events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Giulio Calamita<\/strong>, mayor of Colleferro, revealed that the plant had been closed for the summer holidays at the time of the incident, noting that the timing likely prevented what could have been a catastrophic loss of life.<\/p>\n<p>Calamita told Italian media that damage in the nearest residential areas was confined to broken windows and that he had not activated the municipal emergency centre. A shopping outlet situated close to the plant was not evacuated.<\/p>\n<p>All 24 staff members on duty at the time were accounted for and evacuated to safety, according to local media reports. The plant&#8217;s fire-suppression system activated before the detonation, allowing workers to reach protected areas. While the site was operational, many production lines had been suspended for the holiday period.<\/p>\n<h2>Industrial Accident Under Investigation<\/h2>\n<p>Italian authorities are treating the event as an industrial accident. The public prosecutor&#8217;s office in Velletri has launched an inquiry for the offence of causing a fire, with early assessments ruling out sabotage or any subversive activity. Carabinieri from Colleferro and the investigative unit in Frascati are leading the probe.<\/p>\n<p>Access to the blast site remained restricted for safety reasons while firefighting operations continued. Fire crews brought the blaze under control shortly after 6pm, though make-safe procedures extended into the night.<\/p>\n<h2>Strategic Ammunition Supplier to Europe and Beyond<\/h2>\n<p>The facility supplies ammunition to more than 40 countries worldwide and ranks among the contractors participating in European Defence Agency framework agreements for 155mm artillery rounds. These agreements were signed in 2023 as part of coordinated efforts to expand European production capacity.<\/p>\n<p>All 27 EU member states and Norway have signed the agency&#8217;s collaborative ammunition procurement arrangement, which pairs a two-year fast-track initiative for 155mm rounds with a seven-year project covering calibres from 5.56mm and above.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme was established in March 2023 as European capitals moved to replenish national stockpiles while supplying artillery ammunition to Ukraine. By October of that year, seven member states had placed orders through the fast-track mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>The explosion occurs against the backdrop of a broader expansion of defence manufacturing across Europe.
