The figures, released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), show that new energy vehicles captured a record 60.4 per cent share of new passenger car sales during the month.<\/p>\n<p>The milestone comes as Chinese automakers increasingly rely on foreign markets to absorb production, with exports surging while home demand weakens. Domestic sales of new energy vehicles fell 2.8 per cent year-on-year to 1.008 million units in July, while exports exploded by 145 per cent to 553,000 units.<\/p>\n<p>July sales declined 5 per cent from June levels, though seasonal factors typically produce such dips in the Chinese market. However, this stability conceals a dramatic shift in where those vehicles are being sold. Domestic sales across all powertrains plummeted 23.6 per cent year-on-year to 1.541 million units, while exports across all categories surged 81 per cent to 1.043 million vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Conventional combustion-engine vehicles bore the brunt of the domestic decline, with sales collapsing 45.7 per cent year-on-year. The export surge effectively offset the domestic market contraction, though the trend raises questions about the sustainability of China&#8217;s automotive production levels.<\/p>\n<h2>Battery Electric Vehicles Outpace Plug-In Hybrids<\/h2>\n<p>Within the new energy vehicle segment, battery electric vehicle sales reached 1.072 million units in July, up 32 per cent year-on-year but down 6.1 per cent from June. Plug-in hybrid sales totalled 489,000 units, representing an 8.4 per cent year-on-year increase and a 2.2 per cent decline from the previous month.<\/p>\n<p>Battery electric vehicles thus continued to grow significantly faster than plug-in hybrids, maintaining their dominance within China&#8217;s electrified vehicle market. Production figures show new energy vehicle manufacturing reached 1.576 million units in July, up 26.8 per cent year-on-year, with battery electric vehicle production exceeding one million units for the second consecutive month.<\/p>\n<p>For the first seven months of 2026, China produced 9.014 million new energy vehicles, nearly 10 per cent more than during the same period last year. CAAM&#8217;s wholesale sales figures include both vehicles sold domestically and those destined for export.
