For years, he wrote letters and contacted social workers, desperate for any fragment of information about his birth mother.<\/p>\n<p>The search proved frustrating. Legal restrictions on identifying information meant social workers could reveal only minimal details \u2014 that she had served in the military and was estranged from her family, having spent time in foster care herself. Despite keeping the file open for additional months, the birth mother never responded. The case was eventually closed, leaving Bomberger without answers for decades before he would attempt the search again.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than allowing the painful circumstances of his conception to define him, Bomberger has built his life and work around a central conviction: the circumstances of conception do not determine human worth. He points to humanity&#8217;s natural instinct to root for the underdog and celebrate those who overcome impossible situations as evidence that people are inherently wired to recognize the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.<\/p>\n<p>The cultural narrative that equates being unplanned with being unwanted and unloved is fundamentally false, according to Bomberger. He describes this messaging as poisonous propaganda that devalues human life based on circumstances beyond anyone&#8217;s control. Every human life possesses purpose, he maintains, regardless of whether that life was planned or unplanned, able-bodied or disabled.<\/p>\n<p><em>The strength of a society is not in how it destroys the weak,<\/em> Bomberger writes, but in how it defends the weak.<\/p>\n<p>Bomberger expresses profound gratitude for his adoptive parents who wanted him despite how he came to be. Growing up as one of 15 children in a diverse adoptive family \u2014 he was the first of 10 adopted \u2014 shaped his understanding that every person matters. Removing even one person from that family would have fundamentally changed everything, he reflects.<\/p>\n<p>Decades after his adoption, Bomberger eventually found biological family members who told him repeatedly that they had always loved him and always wondered what had happened to him. This discovery reinforced his central message: everyone is wanted by someone.<\/p>\n<p>The courageous decision his birth mother made to give him life rather than end it created ripples through time that continue to unfold, affecting not only Bomberger himself but also the biological family who longed to know him and the countless people his work has reached.<\/p>\n<p>Bomberger&#8217;s reflections appear in his new memoir, <em>Should Have Been Aborted<\/em>. His other published works include <em>Not Equal: Civil Rights Gone Wrong<\/em> and the children&#8217;s books <em>He is He<\/em> and <em>She is She<\/em>.
