Turkey is intensifying pressure, with Greece proceeding to upgrade its Leopard 2A4 battle tanks. The situation in the region and the strategic challenges demand the strengthening of the Greek Armed Forces, with the Leopard 2A4 upgrade currently at a critical stage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The discussion regarding the upgrade of the Hellenic Army\u2019s tanks has progressed significantly, with the latest developments indicating that the decision to modernize them is nearly certain.<\/p>\n

The upgrade dossier has reached the highest level, with the necessary recommendations from the Hellenic Army General Staff (HAGS) reinforcing the prospect of a positive decision.<\/p>\n

The Leopard 2A4<\/h2>\n

The Leopard 2A4<\/strong>, of German manufacture, constitute the backbone of the Hellenic Army, with 170 units securing power in the Evros region. Greece, with this strong number, ranks among the countries with the most powerful tank forces in the area.<\/p>\n

The upgrade program concerns approximately 170 to 180 Leopard 2A4 tanks, aiming to elevate them to a level equal to or even superior to the Leopard 2HEL, making them the \u201cspearhead\u201d for forces in Evros.<\/p>\n

The main improvements include:<\/h3>\n

  • Enhanced armor protection.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Installation of modern fire control systems.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Addition of advanced targeting and communication systems.<\/strong><\/li>\n

    The potential involvement of the Greek defense industry, such as METKA and ELVO, in the program\u2019s implementation is also prominent. Official announcements from HAGS are expected soon to determine the final cost and delivery schedule.<\/p>\n

    Until the upgrade is finalized, HAGS is prioritizing immediate fleet support. The Supreme Military Council (AS\u03a3) and the Supreme Council for National Defence (SAGE) have already convened regarding the COOPLOG (Leopard Club) program, which includes the procurement of spare parts valued at 4,000,000 euros via the German government agency.<\/p>\n

    Greece and Turkey possess two of the strongest tank fleets within NATO. Although Turkey has numerical superiority with approximately 2,492 tanks, Greece can boast qualitative superiority with its modern Leopard 2HEL and Leopard 2A4, balancing operational capabilities.<\/p>\n

    While Turkey retains a numerical advantage, Greece focuses on the qualitative superiority of its armored vehicles to enhance its deterrence capacity.<\/p>\n

    Turkish tanks are outdated and require modernization, a fact well known to the Turks, who are attempting to address this with the development of the new Altay battle tank.<\/p>\n

    The Greek Leopard 2HEL tanks are considered (and clearly are) superior to the Turkish Leopard 2A4 in terms of armor and fire control systems, strengthening Greece\u2019s strategic position in the region.<\/p>\n

    Countering Drones<\/h2>\n

    Of course, no tank modernization should be limited merely to mechanical or weapons upgrades. This is due to the emergence of unmanned systems (drones) on the modern battlefield.<\/p>\n

    As demonstrated clearly in Ukraine, all battle tanks that do not consider the operational factor of drones will sooner or later become bright, noisy fireworks…<\/p>\n

    Therefore, it is essential, before any modernization begins, to find a satisfactory solution to protect them against drone threats.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Countering all kinds of drones is the factor that must not be ignored.<\/strong> Otherwise, we will end up throwing hundreds of millions of euros to the Germans and have achieved \u201ca hole in the water\u201d!<\/p>\n
