Trump noted that she had been detained since December 2024 during the administration of former President Joe Biden, and praised Iran for what he described as a gesture of goodwill. The freed American is now safely outside Iran and in good condition.<\/p>\n<p>The woman was later identified on social media as <strong>Dena Karari<\/strong> by her attorney, <strong>Jared Genser<\/strong>, a prominent human rights lawyer who has secured the release of more than 340 prisoners of conscience from 20 countries over the past two decades. Genser confirmed his client&#8217;s freedom in a post on X, attributing the success to what he called the extraordinary and relentless efforts of President Trump. The State Department declined to confirm Karari&#8217;s identity.<\/p>\n<p>Genser told media outlets that Karari had been prohibited from leaving Iran after visiting family in Shiraz. She was subjected to repeated interrogations but was not formally detained. According to previous reporting, Karari may be the Iranian American dual national who worked for a U.S. technology company and operated a charity for children in Iran. Iranian authorities confiscated her passports and later charged her with espionage, charges Genser described as bogus.<\/p>\n<p>Trump posted on Truth Social: <em>She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition. The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Approximately six Iranian Americans are believed to remain imprisoned in Iran. Among them are journalist <strong>Reza Valizadeh<\/strong> and <strong>Kamran Hekmati<\/strong>, both held in Evin Prison, a notorious detention facility in Tehran known for housing political prisoners. A woman in her seventies is also among those still detained, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>The release comes at a delicate moment in U.S.-Iran relations. Earlier Wednesday, the Pentagon announced it had disabled the first Iranian tanker since Trump reinstated a naval blockade against Iranian ports. The move follows the collapse of a tentative 60-day ceasefire between the two nations, which had briefly eased military tensions.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the ongoing confrontation, Karari&#8217;s release could signal a possible opening for diplomatic progress. Trump has maintained maximum pressure on Tehran while leaving room for negotiation, and Iran&#8217;s decision to allow an American citizen to leave may reflect a calculation that engagement with Washington serves its interests.<\/p>\n<p>The president has previously stated he would consider military action against Iran&#8217;s strategic assets if provoked, including a potential invasion of Kharg Island, a critical oil export terminal.
