The report comes after the left-leaning daily Lib\u00e9ration criticized tax-deductible donations benefiting right-wing groups in April, according to Valeurs Actuelles<\/em>. That campaign prompted Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez<\/strong> to announce an inspection mission in May examining tax relief for donations to general interest associations. Yet the Observatory’s findings suggest the outcry obscured a far larger phenomenon: left-wing structures benefit not only from tax deductions but also from massive direct government subsidies that their right-wing counterparts never receive.<\/p>\n

The study applied comparative analysis to several pairs of organizations. Le M\u00e9dia, for instance, received over 131,000 euros in state subsidies in 2024, while its right-wing equivalent TVL received nothing. Terra Nova was compared to Institut Iliade, Blast to Radio Courtoisie, and Gisti to ASLA. In each case, the left-wing organization combined tax deduction benefits with direct public money, while the right-wing counterpart drew no subsidies whatsoever.<\/p>\n

Top Recipients of State Funding<\/h2>\n

Of the 23 billion euros in public subsidies distributed to associations in 2024, the document ranked the ten most heavily subsidized structures. Coallia<\/strong> topped the list with more than 240 million euros received in 2024, despite an embezzlement case involving its former territorial director. Groupe SOS<\/strong> followed with 118.6 million euros, the Salvation Army with 108.2 million, Aurore<\/strong> with 96.43 million, and Emma\u00fcs<\/strong> with 96.4 million euros.<\/p>\n

Emma\u00fcs notably co-signed a June 2024 communiqu\u00e9 titled “Together, against the extreme right” alongside the CGT union and the League of Human Rights. France Terre d’Asile<\/strong>, chaired by former minister Najat Vallaud-Belkacem<\/strong>, rounded out the ranking with over 76 million euros in subsidies. These funds partly financed propaganda brochures promoting the reception of “exiled persons,” paid for by the state, the European Union, and numerous departmental councils.<\/p>\n

Media Subsidies Favor the Left<\/h2>\n

Public financing of the left extends beyond associations into media organizations, as Valeurs Actuelles<\/em> reports. Press subsidies flow disproportionately to left-wing publications. L’Humanit\u00e9<\/strong> received 5.7 million euros in public aid in 2024, equivalent to 0.567 euros per copy published. Aid to Lib\u00e9ration<\/strong> increased by 317,000 euros to reach 6.6 million euros.<\/p>\n

Blast<\/strong>, a far-left media outlet founded in 2021, collected 1.7 million euros in press subsidies alone between 2022 and 2024. StreetPress<\/strong>, another far-left outlet, describes itself as supported by patronage and subsidies totaling 310,000 euros in 2023, supplemented by a partnership with the Paris city government and membership in the European Sphera Network.<\/p>\n

Public Broadcasting’s Neutrality Problem<\/h2>\n

The document addresses public audiovisual funding, which exceeded 4 billion euros in 2024 according to the Alloncle report published in May 2026. But this financing accompanies serious failures in neutrality requirements, the authors argue. A multi-union tract from June 2024 declared that signatories did not wish to remain neutral or impartial in the face of what they termed complacency toward the extreme right. Television personalities including Patrick Cohen<\/strong> and Samuel \u00c9tienne<\/strong> reportedly defended this position, asserting that neutrality does not exist in their profession.<\/p>\n

The study quantifies this imbalance: during the 2022 legislative election campaign, the left-wing alliance received 62 percent of airtime on France Culture, compared to just 7 percent for the national right. The report also criticizes the France TV Slash platform for promoting fundraising campaigns supporting the “Truth for Adama Traor\u00e9” committee and the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as the program Drag Race France, which the authors describe as LGBT movement propaganda costing over 300,000 euros per episode.<\/p>\n

Cinema Subsidies Complete the Picture<\/h2>\n

The cinema sector follows the same pattern. The National Cinema Center distributes approximately 800 million euros in annual subsidies, funded through automatic uncapped taxes. The Observatory’s estimate that left-wing associations and aligned media capture billions in public funds annually aligns with earlier research. Two journalists from L’Incorrect calculated in their 2021 book “The True Cost of Progressivism” that public financing of the left reached 7.8 billion euros per year.<\/p>\n

The contrast between public outcry over private donations to right-wing organizations and the silence surrounding vastly larger government subsidies to left-wing structures highlights a double standard in French political discourse, the study suggests.<\/p>\n
