A figure who supported the Kremlin and unexpectedly condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine in a social media post this week that went viral has been admitted to a psychiatric facility, the hospital announced on Thursday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ilya Remeslo built a career criticizing Putin\u2019s detractors until he himself became one, publishing late Tuesday night a manifesto to his 90,000 followers on Telegram titled: “Five reasons why I stopped supporting Vlad.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Vladimir Putin is not a legitimate president. Vladimir Putin must resign and be tried as a war criminal and a thief,” Remeslo wrote in his post.<\/p>\n

This turnaround earlier this week surprised both the pro-war blogging community in Russia and the exiled anti-Kremlin opposition.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the Saint Petersburg newspaper Fontanka reported that Remeslo had been admitted to the city\u2019s Psychiatric Hospital No. 3.<\/p>\n

Reuters was unable to contact Remeslo himself or verify how he came to be hospitalized.<\/p>\n

A woman who answered the hospital\u2019s phone number confirmed to Reuters that a man with the first name, patronymic, and last name matching Remeslo\u2019s had been admitted to the facility.<\/p>\n

The hospital employee, who did not give her name, said she had no details on when Remeslo was admitted or why.<\/p>\n

Remeslo, 42, a lawyer and former member of an advisory body controlled by the Kremlin, had previously been a fierce critic of the late opposition figure Alexei Navalny, Putin\u2019s most prominent critic, who died in a penal colony in the Arctic in February 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
