Municipal councilor Eleni Papadopoulou has launched a sharp attack against Maria Karystianou over her associate’s public support for refugee occupation protesters and hunger strikers, in what represents the first major political test for Karystianou’s new party “Hope for Democracy.”

Papadopoulou directed her criticism at Stratos Sioudakis, a key member of Karystianou’s team, who had published a video supporting the refugee occupation and hunger strikers. The municipal councilor emphasized that this issue constitutes an ideological matter that will clarify whether Karystianou’s political party aligns with the broader patriotic movement or with what she termed “pseudo-progressives” of the woke agenda and hidden servants of globalists.

Background of the Controversy

Papadopoulou pointed out that the specific young woman participating in the hunger strike was among those who entered the municipal council waving an anarchy flag. She noted that the situation surrounding the occupation is well known, as are the demands of those controlling it: continuation of the occupation of public property, obstruction of the creation of social housing, and blocking a hostel for relatives of patients at Agios Savvas Hospital.

“When your key associate supports this thing publicly and you don’t take a position, it means you support it too,” she wrote.

Broader Political Implications

Papadopoulou also referenced Karystianou’s silence regarding the desecration of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier monument, while noting that her party’s founding declaration includes no reference to immigration and the acute problem created by illegal migrants.

“I laugh at those who call her far-right. Ms. Karystianou is left-wing and beyond,” Papadopoulou concluded. “Anyone who has read leftist writings immediately recognizes what wind blows through the declaration. The country doesn’t need Tsipras and his clones. People demand seriousness. This is not seriousness.”

Papadopoulou’s Statement

In her post on X, Eleni Papadopoulou wrote: “I confess that I didn’t know Mr. Sioudakis. I learned that he is one of Ms. Karystianou’s key associates. This gentleman uploaded a video supporting the refugee occupation and the hunger strikers. […] These are what Mr. Sioudakis supports.”

Papadopoulou emphasized that such positions are inconsistent with the need for seriousness that the country requires today. The criticism focuses on the fact that Karystianou has not taken a public position against the actions of her close associate.
