Trump Forced Europe to Boost Defense Spending, Say Analysts
Bill Maher and Ian Bremmer agreed that President Trump deserves some credit for increased European defense spending, though they debated whether Putin's aggression was the primary catalyst.
During Friday’s edition of the HBO program, according to Breitbart News, Maher pointed to Trump’s longstanding criticism of European defense commitments as a catalyst for change across the Atlantic.
The host noted that while the outcome may not have unfolded exactly as Trump intended, the president’s pressure on European allies to shoulder more of their own defense burden has produced tangible results. Germany has ramped up its military spending to levels not seen in approximately four decades, Maher observed, marking a dramatic shift in just one year.
Maher referenced former President Clinton’s characterization of America as the indispensable nation, contrasting it with Trump’s questioning of that role. While Maher expressed some nostalgia for American indispensability, he conceded there was merit to Trump’s position that European countries needed to step up their contributions.
Ian Bremmer, founder of Eurasia Group and GZERO Media, offered a counterpoint by suggesting Russian President Vladimir Putin deserves more credit than Trump for spurring European defense spending, though he granted that Trump still merits some recognition for the shift.
Maher agreed with the assessment that Putin’s aggression served as a threat that motivated European action, while Trump framed the situation as fundamentally a European problem. The discussion touched on American aid to Ukraine, with Maher acknowledging substantial U.S. contributions while criticizing the decision to halt support. Bremmer similarly criticized American backing for Ukraine as insufficient.
