Orbán Reelected President of Fidesz Party
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was reelected Fidesz President with 729 of 737 votes at the party's congress, where he announced structural reforms following recent electoral setbacks.
The landslide victory grants Orbán a one-year mandate, consistent with all other officials elected by party delegates at the congress. Opening his keynote address with a defiant declaration—I never, ever give up!—Orbán was met with thunderous applause from assembled party members.
Ahead of the congress, the Fidesz leader warned that Hungary under the Tisza government is sliding toward political and economic chaos, framing his party’s mission as one aimed at helping the nation avoid such turmoil.
Structural Overhaul to Strengthen Party Unity
Orbán outlined sweeping organizational reforms proposed by the current leadership, designed to counter the challenge posed by opposition forces and improve internal communication channels that had been neglected in recent years. According to The European Conservative, these changes include a fundamental modification of the party’s charter.
The constituency-based system is being scrapped in favor of a structure built around local settlement chapters. Under the new model, chapter members will elect county presidiums, with county presidents automatically gaining membership in the national presidium. The national presidium itself is expanding to 28 members, now including representatives of local governments and MEP Kinga Gál, who will serve as a liaison between Fidesz and the European Parliament, particularly with the Patriots for Europe group.
Acknowledging Electoral Setbacks
In a candid assessment, Orbán summarized the party leadership and membership’s evaluation of the factors behind Fidesz’s recent election defeat. The analysis acknowledged misjudgments regarding expected voter turnout and polling data accuracy, as well as the failure to mount a forceful response to what Orbán described as libels propagated by Tisza.
Orbán openly admitted that Fidesz has lost support among young voters, a demographic the party must now actively work to reclaim. He emphasized that party renewal involves gradually transferring leadership responsibilities to younger generations, signaling a shift in long-term strategy.
Commitment to Continued Service
Following his reelection, Orbán declared his readiness to continue serving his country, reaffirming his commitment to leading Fidesz through the challenges ahead.
Before the congress convened at 10 a.m., Prime Minister Péter Magyar held a press conference, a move critics characterized as an attempt to divert public attention from the Fidesz gathering.
