Prosecutors: Tyler Robinson Targeted Charlie Kirk Over Faith and Politics
Utah prosecutors argue Tyler Robinson should stand trial for murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk in a September 2025 shooting they say was motivated by political ideology.
In a court filing submitted late Tuesday, state prosecutors laid out evidence supporting murder charges against Robinson following a preliminary hearing earlier this month, according to Jack Birle writing in Washington Examiner. The brief provided the prosecution’s most detailed argument yet for why they believe Robinson fatally shot the Turning Point USA founder at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.
Judge Tony Graf is now weighing whether sufficient probable cause exists to allow the case to proceed to trial.
Prosecutors Argue Ideological Motive
The prosecution’s filing contends that Kirk was deliberately targeted due to his conservative political activism and religious convictions. Prosecutors highlighted the stark contrast between Kirk’s publicly stated positions on marriage and sexuality issues and Robinson’s personal lifestyle, specifically citing Robinson’s romantic involvement with his male roommate, Lance Twiggs.
Text message exchanges between Robinson and Twiggs, along with additional evidence, form part of the prosecution’s argument that the accused held views fundamentally opposed to Kirk’s beliefs on gender and sexuality matters.
Bullet Casings Bore Provocative Messages
Among the most striking evidence presented were photographs of bullet casings recovered at the scene. The ammunition bore various inscriptions referencing internet memes and contained messages that appeared to taunt Kirk, including phrases like “Hey fascist, catch” and others mocking the victim.
Prosecutors argue these engravings demonstrate that Robinson specifically targeted Kirk based on his political expression and public advocacy positions.
Defense Has Until Mid-August to Respond
Robinson’s legal team will have until August 18 to file their response arguing insufficient evidence exists for trial. The preliminary hearing standard requires only probable cause, a lower threshold than the beyond-reasonable-doubt standard needed for conviction.
Prosecutors described their case as straightforward, telling the judge this is not a close call on whether to proceed.
Graf scheduled the next hearing for September 1, when he will hear closing arguments from both sides before ruling on whether to bind the case over for trial.
Death Penalty on the Table
If the case advances, Robinson faces charges carrying a maximum sentence of death—a punishment prosecutors have indicated they intend to seek. Robinson’s attorneys previously attempted to remove capital punishment as a possible outcome during a hearing last month, but Graf denied that motion.
The public nature of Kirk’s killing on a university campus sent ripples through political circles last year, and Robinson’s trial is anticipated to draw intense national attention as one of the year’s most closely watched criminal proceedings.
