She started at a very young age in Orestis Laskos‘ talent shows and continued in the variety shows and cabarets of the era. However, her great career took off when her path crossed with that of bouzouki virtuoso Manolis Chiotis. Together they created one of the most explosive and successful duets in the history of Greek song. They were also married for a decade, and appeared together in several Greek films.
The second marriage and the difficulties
After her marriage to Chiotis, Mary Linda married for the second time Alexandros Theocharis, with whom she had a daughter. As she had stated in previous interviews, her second husband physically abused her.
I couldn’t take the very bad behavior and the beatings anymore. I left. I had the strength, though, because I had a golden bracelet on my hand, my voice, she characteristically said in 2012.
Role model for younger generations
Mary Linda influenced with her interpretation and temperament many important singers who followed. Among others, Glykeria, Charoula Alexiou, Anna Vissi, Konstantina and Dimitra Galani have mentioned her influence, while they also had joint collaborations in the past.
Her last live performances in nightclubs took place over three separate seasons: in 1995-1996 with Charoula Alexiou at Nefeli, in 2002-2003 with Glykeria at Charama and in 2011-2012 with Anna Vissi at Rex.
With her voice and her journey, Mary Linda sealed an entire era of Greek popular song, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate.
